Manipur powerlifter Maibam Gulubi won a gold medal for India at the Asian Bench Press Championships in Istanbul. She secured the first place in the junior women's 57-kg category at the event held from September 21 to 27.
Gulubi started her sporting journey two years ago by lifting gas cylinders and heavy weights. Her father was an avid weightlifter, which inspired her interest in the sport from a young age. Local seniors encouraged her to take up weightlifting professionally after seeing her perform well in local sports events.
After returning to India, Gulubi met Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Secretariat in Mantripukhri. The Chief Minister congratulated her on her achievement and praised her for bringing pride to the state and the country.
