Manipur Police Arrest Man for Posting Morphed Official Photos

The Cyber Crime Police Station in Manipur arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly uploading and spreading edited images of state officials on social media. The incident involved the circulation of digitally altered photographs featuring Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen on Facebook.

Details of the Arrest

Authorities identified the suspect as Laishram Mangibabu Singh, a resident of Moirang Khunou Mamang Sabal in the Bishnupur district. Police officials discovered the content during routine digital monitoring and tracked the profile operator to his home. Following the arrest on August 10, 2026, the police seized the mobile phone and SIM card used to upload the offensive material.

Court Proceedings and Bail

When the accused was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Imphal West, investigators requested police custody to determine the software used for the manipulation and to search for other possible individuals involved. However, the court noted that the charges under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita are bailable. Consequently, the court granted bail to the accused upon the submission of a personal recognizance bond and a surety bond worth ₹50,000 each.

Police Stance on Cyber Harassment

Following the court order, the accused was instructed to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The Manipur Police reiterated that they maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding cyber harassment and the creation of deepfakes. Officials have issued a formal warning that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found participating in online defamation or the circulation of indecent digital material.
