Manipur Players Lead India U20 Football Team to Victory

Eighteen football players from Manipur have been selected for the 30-member India U20 men's national squad currently competing in two international friendly matches against Singapore. These games are taking place on August 3 and August 6, 2026, at the Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru. The high number of players from Manipur highlights the state's significant contribution to national football talent.
Preparation for Asian Cup Qualifiers
Under the guidance of coach Mahesh Gawali, the Indian team is using these matches to prepare for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers. These qualifying games are scheduled to be held in Uzbekistan from August 31 to September 6. Players from Manipur fill key defensive, midfield, and forward positions, making up more than half of the national roster.
Successful Start Against Singapore
In the first friendly match held on Monday, August 3, the Indian team secured a 3–0 win against Singapore. Rishi Singh Ningthoukhongjam scored the first goal during stoppage time in the first half. Singamayum Shami added the second goal in the 63rd minute, followed by an own goal from the opposition to finalize the score. The performance of these young athletes has received recognition from sports supporters ahead of the second match scheduled for Thursday.
