The Digital India BHASHINI Division and the Government of Manipur signed an agreement to advance multilingual artificial intelligence and use regional language technology on public digital platforms. The agreement was signed during the BHASHINI Rajyam Workshop held in Imphal. The workshop was organised jointly by the division and the state Department of Information Technology. Officials from the Ministry of Electronics & IT shared details about this new partnership.
The formal arrangement was signed by Amitabh Nag, CEO of the Digital India BHASHINI Division, and Somorjit Salam, Secretary of Information Technology for Manipur. This agreement builds a framework for upgrading digital language resources and adding multilingual services into state administration. Administrative officials and specialists met to check methods for putting Indian language tools into public platforms. They looked at how datasets, models, and application programming interfaces support governance in education, healthcare, legal services, and grievance redressal.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh noted that technological tools help preserve and digitise native speech forms. The sessions highlighted the distinct linguistic landscape of Manipur, which includes Manipuri, Tangkhul, Thadou, Paite, Hmar, and Liangmai. Demonstrations featured a real-time English-to-Manipuri machine translation system. Somorjit Salam stated that digital services work best when local populations understand and use them easily. Officials also focused on technical programmes like the BHASHINI Shilpi platform for students and developers, and the BHASHINI Mitra initiative for community-sourced linguistic inputs. Amitabh Nag added that the partnership aims to ensure language is never a barrier to accessing digital services or opportunities.
