The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal West has remanded two suspects to extended police custody for the daylight murder of an Assam resident outside an Axis Bank branch in Thangal Bazar, Imphal West. The two suspects are 60-year-old Yendrembam Paona Singh and 39-year-old Laishram Ngongo Meitei. The victim was a native of Borojalenga village in the Cachar district of Assam. He was killed after being brutally attacked in a commercial market lane, where his throat was slashed.
According to police investigators, the primary accused, Yendrembam Paona Singh, has admitted to orchestrating the retaliatory attack.
The attack followed a dispute related to the illicit regional contraband trade. Law enforcement authorities have seized blood-stained clothing and a two-wheeler allegedly used during the crime. Search teams are currently conducting operations to recover the murder weapon.
Following the incident, significant anxiety has been caused among inter-state traders and daily-wage migrant workers in the valley.
City Police have intensified foot patrols and identity checks throughout the market perimeter in Thangal Bazar.
