A woman has filed a formal police complaint against a local Trinamool Congress councilor in Malda over an ongoing land dispute. The complainant alleges that the councilor has illegally occupied her family property and threatened her family with violence when they asked for the land to be returned.
The complainant, Sushmita Ghosh, states that the land is located in Bhangabari Saismoija, Old Malda, and was inherited from her mother, Mansi Niyogi. According to the complaint,
the four-katha plot has been under the forced occupation of Ward Number 19 councilor Birjit Haldar since June 2024. The woman alleges that the councilor has built structures on the land and has even placed tenants there without her consent.
Sushmita Ghosh reports that she previously approached the local police station regarding the matter but claims no action was taken. When she and her husband visited the councilor’s home to demand the return of their property,
she alleges that the councilor threatened her and her husband with death. The woman has now filed a fresh written complaint at the Malda police station seeking legal intervention.
In response to the accusations, TMC councilor Birjit Haldar has denied all claims of illegal occupation. He stated that he had entered into an agreement to purchase the land from the woman, but the registration process was never completed despite the passage of time.
The councilor claims he is the legal owner of the property and asserts that he purchased the land from the actual owner after conducting his own verification.
