Locals Protest Against Fly Ash Pollution in Asansol

Residents of Sanktoria Husainia More in Asansol staged a protest on Friday by stopping dumpers loaded with fly ash to highlight the severe air pollution in the area. The protesters demanded an immediate halt to the transportation of ash through the Disergarh-Niyamatpur road, which has caused significant health and environmental concerns for local families and shopkeepers.

Impact of Fly Ash on Residents

Local residents stated that fly ash and dust from the dumpers are constantly spreading into nearby homes, shops, and school routes. The accumulation of dust has made daily living difficult for the community, causing respiratory and eye irritation for many people. According to the reports from Hindusthan Samachar, this route was previously restricted for such heavy vehicles, but the recent resumption of dumper movement has worsened the pollution levels significantly.

Concerns Raised by Local Stakeholders

Shopkeepers and pedestrians reported that the dust clouds created by passing trucks affect visibility and disrupt business operations throughout the day. Even dumper drivers mentioned that the thick dust clouds make it difficult to see the road clearly, especially at night, which increases the risk of road accidents. Local leaders have confirmed that they have already submitted formal complaints regarding this issue to the District Magistrate, the Pollution Control Board, and the local police commissioner.

Police Intervention and Demands

Following the protest, police officials from the Sanktoria outpost arrived at the scene to manage the situation and speak with the agitators. The residents and local leaders have urged the administration to permanently stop the movement of ash-laden dumpers on this road. Additionally, they have demanded an immediate cleanup of the accumulated dust and a long-term solution to address the rising pollution levels in the region.
