Kolkata police arrested Vireswar Mitra, the owner of Shikha Inn hotel, from his home following a massive fire. The tragic fire broke out late Tuesday night at the hotel located on Mirza Ghalib Street in the New Market area.
The deadly blaze resulted in the deaths of nine people, including eight citizens of Bangladesh.
Hotel employees noticed flames coming out of the building at around three in the morning and tried to calling the owner, but he did not answer his phone.
The owner had been missing since the incident while police continuously searched for him.
Officers finally arrested him on Saturday from his residence located in Behala on Diamond Harbour Road.
Police found that Mitra leased one floor of the hotel to a businessman named Abu Jafar for forty thousand rupees per month.
The businessman also fled with his family from their home after the deaths occurred.
Authorities are now investigating the role of the hotel owner and other connected people in this case.
