Kolkata and its surrounding areas witnessed a sudden and intense shift in weather on Monday evening as heavy rainfall led to significant waterlogging across the city. After a day of humid and sunny conditions, thick clouds gathered rapidly, resulting in extreme precipitation that mirrored past severe weather events in the region.

Cloudburst Conditions in City Areas

Following a day of high humidity, cumulonimbus clouds formed quickly over Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and parts of Hooghly. The rain intensity was particularly high in central and northern Kolkata. Belgachia recorded 130 mm of rainfall in just one hour, while the Thanthanía Kalibari area received 100 mm within the same timeframe. Other locations like Ultadanga and Dattabagan also saw rainfall figures near 100 mm, with Veerpada and Maniktala recording 90 mm and 80 mm respectively.

Widespread Waterlogging and Commuter Distress

The extreme intensity of the downpour caused immediate waterlogging in several parts of the city. Streets in Muraripukur, Ultadanga, Shyambazar, Ahiritola, Tala, Belgachia, and Deshbandhu Park were submerged under water. This sudden weather change caused significant difficulties for commuters returning from their offices during the evening hours. The intensity of the rain was reminiscent of the severe weather experienced in the city on September 23, 2025, according to Hindusthan Samachar.

Weather Patterns and Forecast

Prior to Monday evening, the city had enjoyed two days of respite from heavy rain following a five-day wet spell that ended on August 7. The Alipore weather office noted that the intense cloud cover was localized, affecting mainly Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and parts of North 24 Parganas rather than the entire state. The localized nature of these clouds resulted in heavy rainfall being restricted to specific pockets of the region rather than widespread state-wide precipitation.
