Kolkata Customs Seizes Illegal Plants Worth Crores

The Air Intelligence Unit of Kolkata Customs intercepted 160 kilograms of live plants and seeds brought by two passengers from Bangkok. The goods arrived at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport on August 15 and were seized for violating import regulations.
Details of the Seizure
Authorities discovered the materials upon the arrival of flight B3-701. The passengers did not have the required permits to bring these items into India. Officials confirmed that the seized plants and seeds are now scheduled to be sent back to Bangkok. The value of the seized consignment is estimated to be several crores.
Legal Violations and Investigations
Customs officials acted under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962. A follow-up search at the passenger's home and office revealed evidence of cash sales made without GST invoices. Authorities are currently investigating the source of the plants in Thailand and identifying potential buyers within India.
Import Regulations and Safety
Strict rules exist to prevent harmful pests and diseases from entering the country. The Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine & Storage manages these procedures to protect local agriculture. Travelers are only allowed to bring small amounts of plant material for personal use without permits. All other imports require proper phytosanitary certification and quarantine approval as outlined by the Department of Plant Protection, Quarantine & Storage. Officials remind all travelers to declare plant matter to avoid legal action as stated by the Ministry of Agriculture.
