Jalpaiguri Faces Severe Waterlogging After Heavy Rain
Heavy rainfall across Jalpaiguri on Wednesday evening caused widespread waterlogging in low-lying urban areas and residential neighborhoods. This weather event follows severe weather warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department regarding heavy to very heavy rainfall across North Bengal.
River Levels and Flood Risks
Continuous rain over the past few days has pushed major rivers, including the Teesta and Karala, toward critical levels. The water level of the Teesta River rose significantly on August 4, 2026, due to constant rain in the hills and the Dooars region. The IMD has also forecasted a potential rise in water levels for the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka, and Raidak rivers. Accumulated rainwater has flooded main roads, disrupted traffic, and entered homes and shops in several municipal wards.
New Alert System for Residents
To improve safety, residents living near the Karala River will now receive official flood alerts. These alerts, categorized as yellow and red, are based on data from a newly operational rain gauge and water-level monitoring system near Subhash Bridge. Krishnendu Bhowmik, Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department, confirmed that technical issues with the monitoring system are now resolved, allowing for active warnings throughout this monsoon season. Rainfall data recorded up to August 4 shows heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas, including 12 cm in Jhallong and 11 cm in Bagdogra.
Safety Measures and Official Response
Local disaster response teams and civic authorities are currently inspecting drainage outlets to clear blockages and monitoring water levels closely. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay cautious as heavy rain continues. The IMD suggests that people should seek shelter in safe locations, limit travel, and avoid staying in weak or kutcha houses during intense downpours. The Jalpaiguri District Disaster Management Authority has established a 24/7 control room and Quick Response Teams to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the ongoing weather conditions.
