Jalpaiguri Police Launch Major Drive Against Drug Peddling
Jalpaiguri police have launched a widespread anti-drug operation in the city following complaints from local residents regarding the illegal trade of narcotics. The action comes two days after two youths reported the open smuggling of drugs in their area to the authorities. According to the Hindusthan Samachar report, the police are now taking strict measures to curb these activities in the affected neighborhoods.
Police Action in Indira Gandhi Colony
The police conducted a special operation on Monday night in the Indira Gandhi Colony area of Jalpaiguri. During this raid, the Kotwali police station team seized bottles of liquor and various narcotic substances from individuals involved in the illegal trade. Police officials confirmed that constant action is being taken against drug peddlers operating in the area to ensure the safety of the residents.
Background of the Complaint
The operation was initiated after two local residents, Deep Das and Gagan Sakaru, complained about the long-standing drug trade in their locality. The youths had approached the Chief Minister’s convoy last week while he was traveling from the District Magistrate office to the Jalpesh temple. The local residents alleged that illegal drug businesses have been operating behind several tea stalls and hotels in the Indira Gandhi Colony market area for a long time. They stated that this activity has negatively impacted the daily lives of citizens and is affecting the local youth.
Ongoing Efforts to Curb Illegal Trade
Jalpaiguri District Superintendent of Police Sujata Kumari Veenapani stated that the police are conducting continuous anti-drug campaigns across the entire district. While local residents noted that police have conducted raids in the past, they expressed concern that the illegal trade often resumes shortly after such operations. The district administration maintains that it remains committed to carrying out persistent efforts to eliminate drug-related activities throughout the region.
