Jalpaiguri Phytochemical Complex Remains Closed for 10 Months

The Phytochemical Complex in Jalpaiguri, operated under the West Bengal Pharmaceutical and Phytochemical Development Corporation, has remained shut for the last 10 months. This closure has created significant concern among employees, local farmers, and nearby residents regarding the future of the state-run facility.

Background and Production Details

Located in Todalpara near Jalpaiguri town, the complex was established during the tenure of the previous state government. The facility spans 34 acres of land, although only two acres are utilized for the production unit and the cultivation of medicinal plants. Historically, the complex produced essential items such as phytol for the tea and agriculture sectors, along with phenyl, liquid soap, and triacontanol for government hospitals and agricultural use.

Reasons for Closure and Staff Concerns

Employees report that production stopped due to a lack of raw materials and necessary supplies. While staff members continue to receive their salaries, there is growing anxiety about the long-term viability of the institute. Because production has been stalled for nearly a year, long-term clients have started seeking alternative suppliers for their needs.

Demands from Local Stakeholders

Local farmers who provided their land for the project have expressed their disappointment, noting that they gave their property with the hope of generating local employment and economic growth. These landowners are now actively demanding that the state government take immediate steps to resume operations at the complex.

Current Official Status

Responding to the situation, the Deputy Superintendent of the Phytochemical Complex, Mr. Gupta, stated that technical issues are responsible for the halted production. He confirmed that the matter has been formally reported to the state government. Management maintains that efforts are underway to resolve these technical problems so that operations can restart in the near future.
