Jalpaiguri Flooded After Record Rainfall Hits Region

Heavy rainfall has caused severe waterlogging in several residential areas of Jalpaiguri, while the rising water levels of the Teesta and Karala rivers have disrupted the lives of hundreds of families. According to reports from Hindusthan Samachar, the district has been severely impacted by the ongoing monsoon weather.

Record Rainfall Leads to Severe Waterlogging

Data from the meteorological department shows that the district recorded 165.60 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours, marking the highest amount of rain this monsoon season. The continuous downpour has led to rapid water level rises in the Teesta and Karala rivers. As a result, water has entered homes and covered roads across Jalpaiguri city and nearby areas, causing significant hardship for local residents.

Worst Affected Border Areas

The situation is particularly critical in the Sadar block, specifically in the areas of Gadalbari, Chandandanga, and Camper Hat near the Bangladesh border. More than 200 families are currently trapped in their waterlogged homes due to the flooding. Residents report that the lack of proper drainage systems in these areas leads to similar flooding problems during every rainy season.

Drainage Issues and Administrative Response

Local residents have pointed out that debris blocking hume pipes used for movement in the border area is further preventing water from draining away properly. This blockage has made the flooding situation much worse for the people living there. While the local administration is monitoring the situation, residents are requesting urgent relief and a permanent solution to the recurring drainage problems in the district.
