Jadavpur University Clash Leads to Probe Proposal

Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya has termed the recent clash between student groups as unfortunate and unexpected. The university is now considering the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the incident where SFI and ABVP student organizations were involved in a physical altercation. The administration plans to consult with the state government and the Chancellor, Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, regarding this investigation.

Details of the university incident

According to university reports, the conflict started during a general meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students Union. Reports indicate that multiple students from both sides were injured during the confrontation. Allegations have been raised that external individuals entered the campus, leading to students being confined in the Aurobindo Bhavan building and attempts of arson outside the premises.

Security measures and future steps

Vice-Chancellor Bhattacharya noted that while CCTV cameras have been installed on campus, the university had previously expressed reservations about setting up a police camp. He emphasized that the primary focus of the administration remains the safety and security of all students on campus.

Ongoing student protests

Following the incident, both student factions have scheduled separate protest programs. The SFI has planned a meeting at the Jadavpur 8 number bus stand, while the ABVP has organized a meeting at Golpark followed by a march toward the university. The Vice-Chancellor has urged all students to maintain peace and ensure that the law and order situation is not disrupted during these protests. The matter has also been brought to the attention of the Calcutta High Court.
