Indian Railways Clarifies Rules For Oversleeping Passengers

Indian Railways has officially clarified that passengers who oversleep and miss their scheduled destination station are not entitled to free return travel. This update was shared by the railway authorities on August 5, 2026, to address common traveler concerns regarding train journey policies. It is important for passengers to note that missing a station due to sleep does not qualify for any special transport concessions.

How to use the Destination Alert service

To help travelers wake up before their stop, Indian Railways provides a Destination Alert service. This feature sends a mobile notification to the passenger approximately 20 minutes before the train reaches the booked destination. Passengers can activate this service by calling the railway helpline number 139 or by sending an SMS with the text ALERT to 139 for a small fee. This service is designed to assist those who may fall asleep during long journeys.

Rules for missing your boarding station

Regulations for missing a boarding station are different from those regarding destination stops. For travelers with reserved tickets, the Two-Stop Rule ensures that the Travelling Ticket Examiner cannot reallocate a seat for at least one hour or until the train passes the next two stations. If a passenger fails to board the train and does not inform the authorities, the ticket may be marked as Not Turned Up, allowing the seat to be given to another person.

Policy on changing boarding points

As of April 1, 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw introduced a policy update that gives passengers more flexibility. Travelers with confirmed tickets can now change their designated boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train leaves its original starting station. This rule change is intended to provide convenience to passengers who need to shift their boarding point due to last-minute travel plan adjustments.
