Indian Railways Expands Rail Infrastructure in Siliguri

Indian Railways has launched a major infrastructure expansion project in the strategic Chicken Neck corridor to improve connectivity to the North East. This initiative includes the approval of a fourth railway line between Malda and New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and a 29-kilometer underground rail project linking Tinmail Ghat and Bagdogra to enhance regional security and logistics.

New Rail Projects for Connectivity

The plan focuses on strengthening the rail network in the Siliguri region. A key part of this expansion is the construction of a fourth railway line between Malda and New Jalpaiguri. Additionally, the new 29-kilometer underground rail project connecting Tinmail Ghat and Bagdogra is designed to protect logistics from potential security threats like drone or missile attacks. These developments are intended to ensure safer and more reliable rail transport in this sensitive corridor.

Redevelopment of New Jalpaiguri Station

The New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station is currently being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The central government is investing approximately ₹334 crore into this project, which is scheduled for completion by early 2027. Once the work is finished, the station will include a modern air concourse, better parking facilities, new escalators, elevators, and dedicated food courts for passengers.

Broader Network Improvements

Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has reviewed these ongoing developments. The work at NJP is part of a larger effort to upgrade the infrastructure of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). This broader plan already includes the 100% electrification of the NFR network. Furthermore, the authorities have announced plans to expand Vande Bharat Express services to connect more destinations, including Tinsukia and Agartala.
