Indian Railways has officially expanded its network into Mizoram by connecting the state through the new Bairabi-Sairang broad-gauge line. This project brings direct train connectivity from the rest of the country into the state.
This new railway project
spans approximately 51 kilometers in total length. The route originates at Bairabi and passes through Hortoki, Kawnpui, and Mualkhang before finally ending at Sairang. Because the region is very mountainous and prone to earthquakes, building this line was a major engineering challenge.
The
infrastructure includes dozens of tunnels, large railway bridges, and tall structures over deep valleys, along with curved tracks for the difficult terrain. The Sairang station is located very close to Aizawl, which is the capital city of Mizoram.
