India Launches New Roadmap to Boost Agarwood Exports
India has launched a new industry roadmap to increase the global export of agarwood oil and products, with a special focus on developing the North Eastern Region. The initiative was finalized during a premier industry summit held on August 11, 2026, in New Delhi, organized by the Chemical and Allied Products Export Promotion Council (CHEMEXCIL) along with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MoDoNER) and the Fragrance & Flavour Development Centre (FFDC). This event, as reported by ANI, serves as a major step toward strengthening India’s footprint in the international fragrance market.
New Strategy for North East Export Growth
A central part of the recent summit was the introduction of a roadmap aimed at improving coordination between government agencies and export councils. This plan is designed to help states in the North East export high-value agarwood products while meeting international standards. According to official government data, authorities have already taken significant steps, such as establishing an Agarwood Export Promotion Cell in May 2026. Furthermore, the government has substantially increased the annual export quota for artificially propagated agarwood chips to 151,080 kg and set the limit for agarwood oil at 7,050 kg for the 2024–2027 period. These measures aim to simplify the export process and encourage more trade.
Focus on Production and Infrastructure
The North Eastern Region is essential to this growth because it holds nearly 96.6% of India’s agarwood trees. With approximately 114.3 million trees located in Assam alone, the region is the primary hub for this industry. To support this, the government is funding the Agarwood Cluster Development Project in Assam and Tripura and has set up an international trade and research center in Agartala. Resource mapping and the use of better technology are being prioritized to ensure the industry becomes more sustainable.
Vision for Global Market Expansion
Union ministers and industry leaders emphasized that agarwood has the potential to help achieve the goal of a developed India by 2047. The strategy involves moving from local production to reaching global consumers by investing in advanced processing technologies. The government remains committed to creating better market infrastructure and setting quality standards for agarwood oil to ensure long-term success in the global economy.
