India China Border Trade Resumes at Nathula Pass in Sikkim

Border trade between India and China has started again at the Nathula Pass in Sikkim after being closed for six years. The trade route, located more than 14,000 feet above sea level, was shut in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and border issues. Officials from both countries met at the border to mark the reopening of this trade point.

Boost to Local Economy

The restart of trade is expected to help the local economy by benefiting businesses, drivers, and shops in the region. Sikkim Minister TT Bhutia stated that this move will empower local residents, young entrepreneurs, and craft makers. The Minister noted that this provides a chance to sell Sikkim's organic foods, handmade clothes, and crafts, which is vital for people living in cold mountain areas with limited income sources.

Trader Response and Requirements

Local traders and shop owners have expressed satisfaction with the decision. About 500 traders have applied for official passes, and around 300 have already submitted their forms. The state government has asked the central government to allow local traders to increase their daily spending and trading limits.

Future Business Operations

Business activity is expected to increase gradually over the next two weeks as traders get their documents and prepare goods. Traders have requested the government to update the list of allowed trade items, suggesting the inclusion of modern industrial products instead of traditional goods like farm animals. This reopening of the pass, which was historically part of the ancient Silk Route, is seen as a step toward improving connections between the two nations.
