IIT Kharagpur Plans Future Strategy for Global Innovation

IIT Kharagpur held a high-level leadership dialogue at its Kolkata research park to discuss the future of the IIT system as part of its platinum jubilee celebrations. Experts, researchers, and policymakers gathered to explore how the institution can evolve to meet changing national priorities and global challenges. The event focused on transforming IITs from traditional talent hubs into engines of global innovation.
Vision for the Future of IITs
During the event, IIT Kharagpur Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty highlighted the need for the institution to reinvent itself after 75 years of service. He proposed five key changes to guide the future of the system. These include moving from isolated centers of excellence to a network of excellence, focusing on the real-world impact of research, and shifting from department-based structures to integrated platforms. Prof. Chakraborty emphasized producing job creators rather than job seekers to better serve the nation.
Connecting Research to Social Impact
Prof. Chakraborty stated that it is essential to turn knowledge and research into tangible social benefits. To achieve this, IITs must strengthen their connections with universities, hospitals, industries, and the government. The goal is to take research beyond discovery and move it toward practical implementation and social impact. Strengthening these relationships will help bridge the gap between academic findings and real-world solutions for the public.
Collaborative Approach to Innovation
Speakers at the event discussed various themes, including the role of alumni, healthcare innovation, and future education. There was a strong emphasis on creating shared national research infrastructure and fostering collaboration between education, industry, and the government. Research parks were identified as vital hubs that connect academia, startups, and investors to drive progress. As the institution looks toward the next 25 years, the focus remains on ensuring that Indian institutions play a leading role in building a better world, as reported by Hindusthan Samachar.
