Police in Hooghly district have seized a pickup van carrying 21 calves and arrested two men from the Chanditala police station area. The vehicle was allegedly transporting the calves to Kolkata in an illegal manner. The arrested individuals have been identified as Alamgir Islam and Hakibur Ali, both residents of Barasat in North 24 Parganas.
During routine patrolling on Saturday morning, police stopped a speeding pickup van and found 21 calves inside. The animals were kept in cramped and uncomfortable conditions, which caused poor health for several calves.
The occupants failed to give satisfactory answers during questioning, leading to their immediate arrest by the police.
All 21 calves have been safely brought to the Chanditala police station premises. A veterinarian is currently supervising their medical treatment and monitoring their health status.
Police have initiated a detailed investigation into the matter.
