Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the Election Commission of India. Sarma asked Rahul Gandhi to issue an apology for creating confusion among the public regarding the functioning of the election body.
Sarma pointed out that
the Congress party lost elections even when Manmohan Singh appointed the Election Commission. He stated that
Rahul Gandhi should introspect instead of blaming EVMs every time the party loses an election. He added that the Congress party never visits states after losing and fails to analyze the reasons behind their defeat.
Commenting on the upcoming meeting of the opposition front, Sarma said that
the INDIA alliance is an alliance of defeated and frustrated people. He claimed that
the bloc only aims to weaken the democracy of the country and their meeting will not impact the people of India. Sarma also mentioned that
Rahul Gandhi is continuously attacking institutions across the country.
The controversy started after a media report stated that Election Commissioners raised objections regarding decisions related to the SIR exercise. Opposition parties demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, while Rahul Gandhi accused the poll body of match-fixing. However, the
Election Commission of India rejected all allegations. The ECI clarified that
all decisions related to the schedule of the SIR were taken with the unanimous approval of the entire Commission.
