Recent tunnel accidents in Sikkim and Uttarakhand have raised serious concerns regarding the safety of ongoing infrastructure projects in the Himalayas. A methane gas explosion at the Teesta Stage-6 hydroelectric project in Sikkim resulted in casualties, while a rockfall incident at the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand also claimed a worker's life. These events follow the high-profile 2023 incident where 41 workers were trapped for 17 days in the Silkyara tunnel. The recurring nature of these accidents highlights critical questions about geological risk assessment and the strict enforcement of safety protocols in sensitive mountain regions.

Safety Challenges in Himalayan Construction

Engineers often classify methane gas, toxic gases, high groundwater pressure, and unstable rock formations as major risks in tunnel construction. Despite established global safety procedures for these hazards, accidents continue to occur across various Himalayan projects. The Himalayas represent a complex, young, and geologically active mountain range, making construction significantly more dangerous than in plain regions. Projects such as the Char Dham road network, the Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail line, and various strategic border tunnels require advanced geological studies, real-time monitoring, and effective emergency evacuation systems to prevent disasters like the 2021 Chamoli flood, which caused extensive loss of life at the Tapovan-Vishnugad project.

Need for Better Planning and Accountability

Experts have frequently pointed to the poor quality of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) as a primary cause for construction delays, increased costs, and safety failures. Flawed civil engineering designs in sensitive terrain can lead to catastrophic outcomes. While infrastructure development is essential for regional connectivity and national security, it must not come at the cost of worker safety. There is an urgent need for independent geological reviews, mandatory re-evaluation of project designs by experts, and the public release of safety audit reports. The true success of any national project should be measured not just by its completion, but by the safety of the workers involved and the preservation of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
