Himachal Pradesh Installs Glacial Lake Warning System

Himachal Pradesh has successfully installed a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Early Warning System at the Geepang Gath Glacier in the Lahaul-Spiti district. The new system is located at an altitude of 4,100 metres and aims to improve disaster preparedness in the region.
Focus on Proactive Risk Monitoring
Pushpendra Rana, Special Secretary for Disaster Management, stated that this project marks a shift from reactive disaster response to proactive, science-based risk monitoring and early warning mechanisms in the Himalayas. The monitoring equipment was set up in challenging high-altitude terrain and harsh weather conditions.
Protecting Vulnerable Mountain Communities
Officials noted that climate change is accelerating glacier retreat and increasing risks from glacial lakes. Real-time monitoring systems are now essential for protecting vulnerable Himalayan communities from potential disasters. This project is part of a larger plan to build a comprehensive GLOF monitoring network across the state.
