Heavy rainfall has caused multiple landslides across Sikkim, damaging infrastructure and displacing dozens of residents. The state received nearly twice its normal rainfall over the past week. According to the India Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon brought heavy precipitation on September 24, 2026.
A major landslide struck Rimbi village in the Gyalshing district late Thursday night. This incident led to the immediate evacuation of 128 people from 28 vulnerable households. While no casualties were reported, several homes and government quarters belonging to the Power Department suffered extensive damage or total destruction.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang directed local authorities to remain on high alert to ensure resident safety. The District Disaster Management Authority in Gangtok has started a comprehensive damage assessment. Other affected locations include Tadong, the Sewage Treatment Plant at Sichey, and the Enchey School switching station. The Roads and Bridges Department is currently working to clear blocked roads, though connectivity remains disrupted in multiple areas. Infrastructure in Rimbi and Singlitam has faced instability since August, with conditions worsening after heavy rains on September 14.
The India Meteorological Department reports that enhanced rainfall activity will continue due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. Further heavy rain is forecast for September 26. Authorities advise all citizens to avoid active landslide zones and report any signs of shifting terrain or environmental hazards as emergency services continue their operations.
