Heavy Rain Floods Jalpaiguri as Rivers Rise Rapidly

Heavy rainfall on Saturday, August 1, 2026, caused widespread flooding across Jalpaiguri, submerging roads and homes in most of the city's 25 wards. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded about 95 mm of rain by Saturday morning.

City Areas Affected

Rainwater entered houses and low-lying areas, disrupting daily life. Waterlogging was specifically reported at the Moynaguri Post Office. Residents expressed frustration over the recurring nature of these floods during moderate rainfall.

River Levels and Alerts

Continuous rain has caused the Teesta and Karala rivers to swell. The Irrigation Department has issued a yellow alert for the Mekhliganj area due to the rising water levels of the Teesta River.

Weather Forecast

The IMD forecasts light to moderate rain and thundershowers across North Bengal. Heavy rain is probable in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Coochbehar districts on August 1.

Warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall have been extended from August 2 to August 5, 2026. This may lead to further waterlogging, damage to crops, and rising levels in the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka, and Raidak rivers.
