Heavy Rain Floods Haldia Schools Closed In East Midnapore

Continuous heavy rainfall has severely disrupted normal life across East Midnapore district, leading to widespread flooding and the closure of educational institutions. Following orders from the local administration, all schools ranging from primary to higher secondary levels will remain closed on Tuesday. This decision comes as many school campuses are currently waterlogged, making it difficult and unsafe for students to commute or attend classes.
Severe Flooding In Haldia And Surrounding Blocks
The industrial town of Haldia has been hit hardest by the ongoing weather conditions. Heavy rain since Sunday evening has left all 29 wards of the Haldia Municipality submerged. Similar conditions are reported in the Sutahata block, parts of the Haldia block, and several areas within the Mahishadal block. Water has entered many homes in Nivedita Colony, Azad Hind Nagar, and Haldia Township, leaving residents struggling with waist-deep water. Multiple villages, including Deulpota, Devog, and Shivramnagar, are facing significant waterlogging, which has paralyzed daily activities in these regions.
Tragic Incident And Government Response
Amid the ongoing disaster, a tragic incident occurred in the Deulpota Gram Panchayat area where a mud house collapsed, resulting in the death of 62-year-old Sheikh Nurul Islam and injuring three others. Addressing the crisis, state Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul conducted an inspection of the affected areas on Monday. The minister held a high-level administrative meeting at Haldia Bhawan, attended by the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, and representatives from the Haldia Development Authority to review the drainage and relief operations being carried out across the district.
Administrative Measures And School Closures
The district administration has ordered the closure of approximately 3,000 primary schools and 950 higher secondary schools to ensure student safety. Officials are continuously monitoring the situation as road connectivity and transportation systems remain severely impacted by the rising water levels. While the administration is focused on drainage and immediate relief for the displaced population, reports from Hindusthan Samachar indicate that authorities are on high alert to handle any further emergencies caused by the persistent rainfall.
