The Guwahati Municipal Corporation has launched the Swachh Durga Puja competition across the city to promote eco-friendly celebrations at nearly 175 venue locations. The contest started on October 16, 2026, and will conclude on October 21, 2026, encouraging puja committees to prioritize cleanliness and environmental responsibility. Registration for participating committees closed on October 13, 2026, following a general meeting held on October 9, 2026. Awards for the winners will be distributed during Kali Puja.
Participating committees are evaluated on strict rules, which include waste segregation, eliminating single-use plastics, and using eco-friendly decoration themes.
Each committee must install four distinct dustbins in green, blue, red, and black or yellow at their venues. The use of intoxicating substances is strictly prohibited, pandals must be kept clean, and building pandals on public roads is banned. Committees were also encouraged to use light purple shades inspired by the state flower kopou phool.
GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania urged all committees to cooperate with this urban hygiene initiative. Additional Commissioner Pranab Dutta Goswami presented the formal rules, while Municipal Secretary Abinash Paul noted the event has run for four years.
Flying squads and independent third-party individuals are conducting surprise inspections to ensure transparency. A senior official warned that strict penalties will be imposed for littering.
