The Guwahati Municipal Corporation has launched its annual Swachh Durga Puja competition to promote cleanliness and green practices during the festival. The initiative runs from October 16 to October 21, 2026, after rules were finalized at a meeting in the Betkuchi office on October 9, 2026.
Participating puja committees must follow strict hygiene standards under the directive of Mayor Mrigen Sarania. Each venue needs four different dustbins in green, blue, red, and black or yellow for systematic waste sorting.
Using plastic and intoxicating substances is banned, and celebrations are not allowed on public roads. Applications were submitted by October 13, 2026.
A central committee managed by Additional Commissioner Pranab Dutta is handling the assessment process. Flying squads inspect the city during the six-day festival to check zero-waste rules.
Municipal Secretary Abinash Paul stated that this event has run for four years to build civic awareness. Decorators are encouraged to use light purple or lilac colors inspired by the kopou phool orchid. The corporation will check about 175 venues and give prizes during Kali Puja.
The winners include 25 first prizes, 50 second prizes, and 100 third prizes, with certificates for all participants.
