GNLF files complaint over littering at Sonada martyr memorial

The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) unit of Sonada-Panchan Samiti has expressed strong dissatisfaction after garbage was found dumped at the Tashi Bhutia martyr memorial in Sonada market. Following the incident, the party has filed a formal complaint at the local police station and announced plans to install CCTV cameras to ensure the security of the site. Members of the party, led by committee president Bhupendra Gurung, conducted a site inspection and a cleanliness drive on Monday to restore the dignity of the area.

Action taken by GNLF members

This incident occurred shortly after the party held a tribute program on July 27 to mark Martyrs Day. During that event, organizers had explicitly requested local residents to keep the memorial premises clean and avoid dumping waste. Despite this appeal, garbage was discovered at the site the very next day. The party has officially registered an FIR at the Sonada police station to address the repeated desecration of the memorial site.

Focus on site security and public responsibility

In addition to police involvement, the party is taking proactive steps to prevent further incidents. GNLF leader Rustam Chhetri confirmed that CCTV cameras will be installed around the memorial to monitor the area and deter future misconduct. The party has warned that anyone caught engaging in such activities will face strict legal action. Chhetri emphasized that the sacrifice of the martyrs is a vital part of Gorkha identity and history, making the protection of these monuments a shared responsibility for all citizens of Sonada.
