Fresh ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on August 24, 2026, with houses set on fire and gunfire breaking out between opposing groups. A security officer was injured during the clashes that centered on the Taphou area of Senapati district.
Residential properties were set on fire in Taphou Kuki village in Kangpokpi district and Naga Taphou village in Senapati district between 2:30 AM and 4:00 AM on August 24.
The structures belonged to members of the Kuki, Poumai Naga, and Naga communities.
Armed groups engaged in an exchange of gunfire in the Taphou Naga area by 9:20 AM.
CRPF Sub-Inspector Pradeep Singh sustained a bullet injury to his left foot during the clash and was transported to Senapati District Hospital where he is reported to be out of danger.
Locals blocked National Highway 2 using burning tires and debris following the violence.
Additional security forces have been deployed to the region to stabilize the area while police officials confirmed an ongoing investigation.
