Four suspected members of an inter-state criminal gang were killed in a tactical encounter with the Meghalaya Police Anti-Terrorism Squad on the Songsak-Dakal road in the East Garo Hills.
The incident occurred during a pre-dawn operation when ATS teams conducted a tactical checkpoint and intercepted a vehicle.
According to district police officials, the suspects opened fire after being ordered to stop, and the ATS team returned fire in self-defense.
The four wounded individuals were taken to the Songsak Primary Health Centre and subsequently transferred to Williamnagar Civil Hospital, where
they were declared dead upon arrival. The deceased have been identified as Alachon Marak, Kalam Sheikh, Bhabidul Islam, and Sustam Rabha.
Law enforcement authorities stated that
the group is believed to have operated an inter-state kidnapping and extortion syndicate, including an armed abduction attempt against a businessman near the Meghalaya-Assam border in Damra.
