Former CPI(M) MLA and senior leader Professor Shrutinath Praharaj was arrested by the police from his home in Uttarpara. Two other CPI(M) workers, Dipak Chakraborty and Anupam Chakraborty, were also taken into custody along with him. The arrests were made by the Chunchura police station on Monday night. All three men were presented before the Chunchura court on Tuesday, where the former MLA received bail.
The police stated that the arrests are linked to a protest held on August 10 at the Chunchura Ghari More. During a law violation movement, Left-wing activists and supporters tried to break police barricades and move towards the District Magistrate office. Police tried to stop the crowd, which led to protesters breaking the police blockades.
Police used a lathicharge to disperse the crowd after the confrontation. Many Left-wing activists were injured during the incident, and two police officers also sustained injuries. Police detained more than 40 Left-wing workers on the day of the event before making arrests later that night. The court granted bail to the former MLA following his presentation on Tuesday.
