Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will flag off the first international cargo voyage from Bogibeel Terminal in Dibrugarh, Assam on Monday at 11 AM. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will join the ceremony virtually as the Chief Guest.
According to the press release by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways,
the maiden voyage will carry methanol produced by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited from Dibrugarh to Pangaon Port in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The cargo will travel via National Waterway-2 on the Brahmaputra river and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route. This marks the first time since Independence that a cargo consignment is sailing from Dibrugarh to a foreign port.
The event marks the return of Upper Assam's historical trade link through the Brahmaputra river. The Government is pushing to develop inland waterways as a cheaper, greener, and more efficient transport mode for the Northeast.
Other special guests attending the ceremony include Assam ministers Charan Boro, Rameswar Teli, and Bimal Borah.
The event is organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and IWAI, along with the Government of Assam and APCL.
