Fire Safety Lapses Questioned After Tarapith Hotel Tragedy

A major fire at Hotel Videshini in Tarapith, Birbhum, has resulted in the death of nine people, raising serious concerns about the fire safety standards and the role of the state fire department. The incident, which occurred early Monday, has sparked a debate over how the hotel received safety clearance and whether proper inspections were conducted. According to Hindusthan Samachar, the tragedy has left families devastated, with two children among the victims, and has put the spotlight on the inspection process of the fire department.
Safety Concerns and Inspection Failures
Witnesses reported that guests were trapped in their rooms as fire spread through the building. Many rooms lacked windows, and the lack of electricity made it difficult for guests to locate emergency exits. Former fire department official Uday Narayan Adhikari stated that regular fire audits are necessary rather than waiting for accidents to occur. He pointed out that there is often a gap between inspections and reality, suggesting that the current system of notifying institutions before inspections allows them to temporarily fix safety measures that fail during actual emergencies.
Investigation into Hotel Management and Licensing
Police have arrested the owner of the hotel, and an investigation is underway to verify whether the establishment followed fire safety regulations. Authorities are currently examining documents to determine if the hotel had adequate emergency exits and proper lighting systems for fire evacuation. Reports indicate that 28 people were rescued, while seven individuals are receiving treatment at Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital.
Official Oversight and Allegations
District administration officials have suggested that there was negligence regarding fire safety management. The hotel had received its fire safety license during the current state administration, and allegations have surfaced regarding the hotel owner's connections to local political figures. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on why the safety deficiencies were not addressed earlier and who is responsible for the oversight that led to this loss of life.
