A passenger ferry faced a dangerous engine failure on the Brahmaputra River in Majuli. The vessel was traveling on the Nimatighat to Kamalabari route when it stopped working and started drifting toward rough water and sandbars.
Local boatmen and SDRF personnel quickly helped rescue the stranded boat. The ferry was carrying many passengers, two-wheelers, and market supplies when it lost control. Local boatmen saw the distress signals and tied towing lines to stop the vessel from drifting further. SDRF team members nearby also helped guide the boat safely to a bank landing.
Passengers are now demanding stricter safety checks for river transport. Commuters raised concerns about using old, single-engine boats during the flood season and questioned the safety audits done by regional authorities
river safety measures. The Assam Inland Water Transport Regulatory Authority has previously stated that many boats run without proper fitness checks even under the new rules. The state government is working to upgrade the fleet with new steel catamarans, but these recurring failures keep raising public demand for strict surprise inspections.
