Two people died and three others sustained critical injuries after an SUV crashed into a concrete streetlight pole and caught fire on National Highway 27 in Assam. The fatal accident took place on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Kenapatty near Purani Gudam in the Nagaon district.

Details of the Accident

The Arunachal Pradesh-registered vehicle was traveling from Arunachal Pradesh toward Guwahati when it lost control. The high-speed collision caused the SUV to immediately burst into flames on the median. Two occupants were trapped inside the crushed cabin and died at the scene from severe burn injuries before fire crews could put out the fire. Local authorities are currently verifying the identities of the deceased individuals.

Rescue and Investigation

Local residents and highway patrol teams rescued three other occupants from the burning vehicle. The injured include the registered vehicle owner Vikas Kumar and driver Sonu Kumar, along with one other person. All three survivors were shifted to a medical facility in Guwahati for emergency care and remain in critical condition. Nagaon Police have launched an official investigation into the cause of the crash, examining factors such as high speed and potential mechanical failure.
