A wild elephant attack in Assam has left two people dead and one person seriously injured during the early morning hours. The victims were local rural workers who encountered the animal while inspecting standing crops and walking along tea garden paths in the Dhekiajuli fringe area of Sonitpur district.
The lone animal reportedly emerged from an adjacent reserve forest corridor and moved through drainage gullies to reach residential homesteads.
Villagers and forest trackers tried to drive the animal away using noise-makers and vehicle headlights before it retreated into dense foothill scrub.
These fatalities bring the
total death toll from human-elephant conflict to five individuals over the past 16 days in the district. Following the incidents, tea garden labor communities have started protests, demanding solar perimeter fences and continuous night-duty forest monitoring teams.
