Eight United Democratic Party MLAs in Meghalaya joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, creating a major political shift in the state.
Following the move,
the United Democratic Party suspended three of its MLAs—Kyrmen Shylla, Ollan Singh Suin, and Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah—after they allegedly announced their decision to join another party. The party had issued show-cause notices to the three legislators, but none of them responded.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated that
the decision to switch was entirely of the MLAs and had nothing to do with the National People's Party. He added that
the strength of the coalition remains the same and the functioning of the government will not be disturbed as they have a simple majority in the House.
Along with Shylla, Suin, and Kurbah,
five other legislators joined the BJP, namely Lahkmen Rymbui, Balajied Kupar Synrem, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah, Pius Marwein, and Mayralborn Syiem.
UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said the party would announce its next course of action separately.
