A fatal assault involving a volunteer from the Cockroach Janta Party has led to eight arrests in West Bengal. The incident follows the death of Sheikh Mohammad Mafik, who passed away from head injuries on August 15, 2026, after an alleged attack on August 13, 2026.

Details of the Incident

Sheikh Abdul Hafiz, a 25-year-old volunteer, was participating in the party's School Thik Karo campaign. This campaign involves supporters auditing government-run facilities to document infrastructure and staff shortages. Following the attack on Hafiz, his father Sheikh Mohammad Mafik died from severe injuries.

The Indas Police Station has taken action regarding the case. Officer-in-Charge Chayan Kumar Ghosh confirmed that eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack. This group includes a local booth president. The case is registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) with charges including sections 329(4), 331(4), 126(2), 117(2), 118(2), 304(2), 351(3), 109, 103(1), 61(2), 324(4), and 3(5).

Political Response

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has issued a 10-day deadline for the government to address the party's demands regarding school conditions. Abdul Hafiz has declined financial compensation and requested the construction of a school in his father's memory. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has denied any political involvement in the incident. The state government has provided house guards for the victim's son while a CJP team plans to monitor the investigation.
