ED Raids Assam Locations in Illegal Betel Nut Trade Probe

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a series of raids across Assam as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged illegal trade of Burmese betel nuts. The central agency conducted search operations at six different locations on Wednesday to gather evidence regarding the smuggling network.

Details of the Search Operations

The investigation began early Wednesday morning, targeting multiple premises linked to the suspected trade. According to official sources, five of these searches took place in Jagiroad, while one operation was carried out in the Hailakandi district. The agency had previously initiated investigations at the residence of a businessman in Silchar, though officials have not yet disclosed any findings from these searches.

Targeted Individuals and Businesses

Investigators expanded their search after gathering specific information and conducting preliminary questioning. The raids focused on the business premises and homes of individuals suspected of being involved in the illegal Burmese betel nut supply chain. Among those whose locations were searched are a distributor based on Hajipur Road in Silchar and a betel nut trader from the Leather Wayaut area.

While the operations have been confirmed by official sources, the agency has maintained strict confidentiality regarding the results of the raids. As of now, the Enforcement Directorate has not released any public statement regarding the seizure of goods or any formal legal action taken against the individuals involved.
