ED Freezes Bank Accounts And Seizes Crore In Hawala Probe

Central agencies launched a massive crackdown on October 23, 2026, freezing 1,424 bank accounts and unearthing a 100 crore hawala trail linked to Myanmar. This Operation Trident mission targets the financial network supporting international drug cartels operating across the porous India-Myanmar border. India maintains a 1,643-kilometre border that enforcement agencies identify as a primary land corridor for narcotics originating in the Golden Triangle region. These substances, including heroin, brown sugar, and methamphetamine, typically transit through sectors such as Champhai and Zokhawthar in Mizoram. Reports confirm that the frozen bank accounts belonged to suspected narco-trade operators, mule-account holders, and various beneficiary accounts located in Mizoram and Manipur. Investigators found that mule-account holders rented out their accounts for a fee of 500 rupees per lakh transferred.

Cracking The Illicit Financial Corridor

Official records highlight how the network functioned as a two-way street for illicit goods and payments. Precursor chemicals move toward Myanmar, while finished narcotics enter India to move through Assam toward other states and Bangladesh. One specific operation, a Mini-ATM counter in Manipur known by the code name Nuniang, processed 2,947 transfers totalling 175.03 crore between late 2024 and June 2026. These funds were directed to traders, pharmacies, and various individuals in Mizoram border towns. The Enforcement Directorate has arrested six individuals under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, split evenly between Mizoram and Manipur. The broader multi-agency Operation Trident resulted in 18 total arrests, the seizure of 500 detonators, and the recovery of 12 lakh rupees in cash, as detailed in statements from the Press Information Bureau and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Properties worth 17.82 crore have been provisionally attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, bringing total secured assets to more than 26 crore, according to official ED statements. One such attachment includes the five-storey Hotel JTS in Champhai, which stands in the name of a relative of a hawala operator.

Impact On Border Communities

This initiative follows a series of three separate drug seizures between March 2025 and July 2026 involving heroin, brown sugar, and methamphetamine. Each incident led investigators to the same collection of bank accounts used for laundering proceeds generated across Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, and Tripura. Union Home Minister Amit Shah described this coordinated action as a lethal blow against an international narco-cartel, according to his public address on October 25, 2026. While the goal remains the elimination of major drug networks by December 31, 2029, the operation creates immediate friction for legitimate businesses in border towns like Zokhawthar. Special PMLA courts will soon handle the six arrested individuals as the legal process moves forward, and agencies continue to monitor for any emerging settlement routes. State governments in the Northeast are expected to review banking and trade controls in border regions to prevent future misuse of financial systems.
