A moderate earthquake of 4.9 magnitude struck the border region between Bhutan and Western Assam on Saturday afternoon. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
Tremors were felt across a broad area, including Guwahati, Kamrup Rural, and parts of Bhutan. The sudden shaking rattled buildings and made residents run out onto open streets.
Local authorities confirmed that no major structural collapses, injuries, or casualties have been recorded. Minor rock slips and cracks in older buildings were seen in some rural border areas. Disaster teams checked bridges and walls for safety, while officials continue to monitor the region.
