Durgapur is preparing to host a grand sports festival to celebrate National Sports Day on the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The main aim of this event is to give a big platform to local sports talents and encourage children and young people to take part in sports.
The organizing committee shared the complete schedule of the program during a press conference held at Manglik Theatre on Friday.
Committee coordinator Seema Dutta Chatterjee stated that a sports awareness rally will start from Sidhu-Kanhu Stadium at two in the afternoon on August 22. West Bengal government sports minister Indranil Khan is expected to join this rally.
A colorful sports rally will begin at six in the morning from Sidhu-Kanhu Stadium and go up to Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium on August 29.
Children, players of all age groups, and sports lovers will participate in this grand procession. After the rally, various sports programs and demonstrations will take place at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium where
around 53 athletes from different sports in Durgapur will showcase their skills.
Seema Dutta Chatterjee noted that Durgapur is known as an industrial city, but its achievements in the field of sports are also very remarkable.
Many local players have performed well at state, national, and international levels. The organizing committee wants to build a year-round sports environment in Durgapur instead of limiting celebrations to just one day.
The event will bring various sports organizations, schools, academies, coaches, and players onto a single platform to build better coordination and help new talent grow.
