Protesters gathered outside the home of former Trinamool councillor Shashank Shekhar Mandal in Durgapur on Sunday night. People accused him of corruption during the Trinamool rule and demanded that he should not be allowed to stay in the area.
Police and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed at the DPL Township area under Coke Oven police station.
Security forces used batons and tear gas shells to control the angry crowd after clashes broke out. The tension lasted for about three hours in the locality.
Police detained former councillor Shashank Shekhar Mandal and took him away from the spot.
Authorities have started an investigation into the incident. Police forces remain deployed in the area on Monday morning to maintain law and order.
