Cooch Behar Civic Volunteer Arrested in Gang Rape Case

Police in West Bengal have arrested a civic volunteer in connection with a gang rape case involving a young woman from Mekhliganj. The arrest was made following a joint operation conducted by the police forces of Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri districts. Two other suspects involved in the case are currently on the run, and police teams are conducting raids to locate and apprehend them.

Details of the Incident

According to reports from Hindusthan Samachar, the victim was allegedly lured from Mekhliganj to Dhupguri last week. It is reported that she was held captive in a rented house in Dhupguri, where she was subjected to repeated sexual assault. The victim later filed a formal complaint at the Mekhliganj police station regarding the incident.

Investigation and Arrest

Following the complaint, the Cooch Behar district police initiated an investigation into the matter. Preliminary findings revealed that all three suspects named in the case were working as civic volunteers at the Dhupguri police station. The arrested suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Bulbul Alam, a resident of Bhemtia under the Dhupguri police station area. Police noted that the accused often worked alongside plainclothes police teams.

Ongoing Police Action

Local residents have alleged that the suspects previously misused their association with the police to engage in criminal activities, though fear prevented victims from reporting them earlier. The police are currently searching for the two remaining suspects and have stated that they will be arrested soon. The family of the victim has demanded strict legal action against all those involved, while officials have confirmed that a thorough investigation into every aspect of the case is underway.
