Congress has taken control of the Kharba gram panchayat in Malda after eight years following a no-confidence motion against Trinamool Congress leaders.
The no-confidence motion was passed with 16-0 votes in a special meeting held at the panchayat office on Tuesday.
Trinamool Congress pradhan Rehana Parveen and upapradhan Malay Basak were removed from their posts through this voting process. Out of 26 total members in the panchayat, the original party strength included 14 from Trinamool Congress, 10 from Congress, and 2 from CPI(M).
Five rebel Trinamool Congress members and one CPI(M) member voted in favor of the Congress motion, bringing the total supporting votes to 16 with zero votes against it.
Congress workers and supporters celebrated the victory by applying abir to each other outside the panchayat premises. Senior Congress leader Hiranmay Pandey and former Chanchal MLA Asif Mahbub were present during the event alongside many party workers.
Congress leaders stated that the Kharba area is a historical stronghold for the party, and regaining control after eight years has brought great enthusiasm to the party camp.
