The All India Congress Committee has issued strict rules for the West Bengal Congress unit regarding leaders and workers joining from other parties. AICC West Bengal in-charge Prakash Joshi wrote a letter to state Congress chief Shubhankar Sarkar to ensure proper background checks before taking in any new members.
The AICC stated that while the party needs to grow, it must not include people with criminal backgrounds.
State leaders must first send the names of interested people to the state committee for a background check. After checking their details, the list must be sent to the AICC for final approval.
Only after getting approval from the AICC can these individuals officially join the party.
This strict order comes after former state Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury joined five former Trinamool Congress leaders into the party during a public event in Murshidabad on August 23.
The group included Dhulian Municipality chairman Md Injamul Islam.
Following this event, the AICC stopped the formal joining process for these five leaders and set up the new screening rules.
