Congress Slams Centre Over Manipur Violence And Deaths

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the ongoing violence in Manipur. Kharge questioned who will take accountability for the failure of governance in the state. He condemned the recent killing of four civilians and demanded that the Centre outline steps to restore peace and help displaced people.

Death Toll And Relief Camps

Kharge stated that the death toll has crossed 300 since ethnic violence started in May 2023. He also highlighted that 24,530 people are living in relief camps in poor conditions. The Congress leader asked about the status of the Peace Committee formed by Amit Shah and urged transparency on recommendations from the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Gita Mittal Committee. Kharge expressed concern for women and children and accused the government of failing to protect citizens.

Recent Incidents And Police Action

Recent tensions rose after the killing of three Meitei civilians on October 19 and a Kuki civilian on October 20. Village homes were also set ablaze on October 21. Manipur Police apprehended three suspects linked to civilian killings and recovered 12 firearms. The violence led to widespread protests and a statewide shutdown across five valley districts.
